A Beginner Guide to Coloured Pencils

Coloured pencils are the friendliest way into drawing and colouring — no mess, no drying time, and total control. Here is what a beginner needs to know.

The main types

  • Wax-based — smooth, blendable and the most common. Great all-rounders for beginners.
  • Oil-based — firmer core, sharp points that last, ideal for fine detail.
  • Watercolour pencils — colour dry, then blend with a wet brush for a painterly effect.

Soft core vs hard core

Soft-core pencils (like premium artist sets) lay down rich, vivid colour and blend beautifully. Harder cores hold a point longer and suit detailed line work. Many artists keep both.

What to start with

  • A set of 24–36 covers most needs; larger 72–300 sets give subtle shade ranges.
  • Pre-sharpened sets get you drawing straight away.
  • Add a good sharpener and a blending tool as you progress.

First techniques to try

Practise light layering, gentle pressure for soft tones, and building colour up gradually rather than pressing hard. Coloured pencils reward patience. Browse our coloured pencil sets to get started.
